Figure Drawing in the Age of COVID-19

As we all struggle to answer the challenges of sheltering in place, figure models and drawing teachers seek new ways to keep life drawing alive.  The live online session has been our answer.  My models have had to contort themselves into new poses to fit the horizontal format of the screen, and I and my students have learned to sketch from a computer screen.

Our model in her home, joins us via Zoom and her laptop webcam.

After model Kathryn sets up her pose, I sketch from my monitor, and the students, in their homes, draw Kathryn from their computer screens, with the option of switching over to view me drawing during demonstrations.

My living room has become an art & TV studio!  My husband, David, built the wiring spaghetti monster  that connects us to the internet.
I can see my students on one large monitor, and draw my model from a second, smaller screen.

The camera likes the medium value of toned paper.  I happened to have some brown paper chicken feed bags in my barn, and cut them up and put them to use in the service of art.
