Osher Figure Drawing with Model David

The last class of the semester brought us to the study of hands and feet with model David.  We warmed up with some 3-minute gesture drawings, and David gave us athletic and creative poses.

We moved on to practice drawing hands and feet, which are challenging to draw because of their complexity and expressiveness.  Picking up a paintbrush and small palette, David invited us to draw these familiar tools in use.
We moved on to drawing feet in action. Inspired by the Summer Olympics, David posed kicking a ball, giving us two angles to sketch in our 8-minute drawing.
We finished with a beautiful hour-long pose that capitalized on our practice of drawing the hands, the feet -- and the face.  A clever and expressive pose ideal for our studies!
Many thanks to David for his athletic & creative poses, and for always bringing us something different!

Figure Drawing Upside-Down Gestures and the Face

In Friday's Osher class, our model, David, was also our technical support.  He figured out how to flip the camera's image of himself upside down so that we could have upside-down gestures.

When drawing familiar things like the human form, a part of our brain thinks it "knows" how the final image should look, and tries to "help," leading to a struggle between what we see and what we think.  When we turn the familiar on its head, we free ourselves up to see & draw what's really there.

Below are gestures that were drawn from an inverted image. I notice that I was more likely to capture the line of action rather than try to divide the body into my usual segments.  Sometimes things got out of proportion, but it all felt fresh and exciting.  And,turning them over at the end felt like receiving a gift -- a delightful surprise!

After gestures, we talked about the proportions of the head and face, and finished up with a long pose focusing on the portrait (first image).

The Benefit of Living with a Model Update

The end of the semester has brought a flurry of university Zoom modeling sessions.  In one of our last sessions, David modeled, and I ran the camera.  During the long pose, I grabbed a set of graytone pastels with 5 values:  white, light gray, medium gray, dark gray and black.  After a quick vine charcoal gesture, I tried to capture the areas of highlight and shadow in the bold lighting, discerning each step as best I could.

Though I ran out of time before I completed the scene, I enjoyed getting lost in finding the shadow shapes and values.  His back was all in shadow, yet the values within the shadows on David's back changed with each rise and fall of his form. The dark valley of his spine transitioned into the higher, lighter ridges of muscle that parallel it on either side.

I find I can achieve pleasing results when I stay true to the values I see, and feel lucky to get to practice.

Figure Drawing Update: Kathryn's & David's Duo Poses

I have wanted a chance to really sink myself into drawing duo poses for a long time.  When I teach in the studio, I focus on helping my students, and don't have much time to draw the models myself.  A silver lining to teaching art via Zoom is that I get to draw just as much as my students.  I'm grateful to Kathryn and David for their creative poses to challenge and inspire us!  It was an amazing session.

Figure Drawing Update: Osher Class, Week 2 with David

In my second week teaching this Osher Figure Drawing class, model David gave us some athletic gesture poses, emotive Five-Line poses, and inspiring long poses for our study of proportions -- a great collaboration between model and artists.

Figure Drawing Update: Osher Figure Drawing Class, week one

I have begun teaching a new semester of figure drawing on Zoom with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.  Here are some of my drawings from the first week of class with model Kathryn:

Abstract Five-Line Drawings:
The beauty of the 5-lined drawing is that you only get 5 lines to describe the whole figure, so you are forced to stop and look carefully, an important first step in any drawing.

Figure Drawing Update

I had the good fortune to draw a new model who brought remarkable strength and flexibility to her poses.

Figure Drawing Update

Last night I got to check off a personal art goal -- to draw a muscular man with sanguine Conté crayon in the style of the masters.  I offer my thanks to model David for the inspiration and professionalism he brought to the session.
