Osher Figure Drawing with Models Kathryn & David

Our semester of Osher classes finished Friday with a fantastic duo modeling session.  Kathryn and David brought us beautifully interactive poses. We started with 2-minute gesture drawings focused on blind-drawing the negative space between and around Kathryn & David.

When you draw two models at once, the complexity can be overwhelming.  Looking at negative spaces provides an entry point to simplify the process and get you warmed up.
We moved on to 5-minute gesture drawings focused on capturing the two figures in action.  Each pose told a story, expressed emotion, and caught us artists up in the excitement of capturing all we could on paper.

We finished with a lovely tableau for about an hour and a half (with model breaks).

As an artist, you never know which days you will feel "on" and which days your drawings will fall flat. Friday's class was one of those magical days when the models brought an inspiring performance, and my art came alive.  I still have the drawings propped in my studio for admiration.

Many thanks to Kathryn & David for this amazing session!

Figure Drawing Update: Duo Modeling Session

We finished up the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Figure Drawing class with a duo session featuring models Kathryn & David.

We began with 5 minute gesture poses to get warmed up. Before intertwining in complicated poses, David and Kathryn gave us standing front and back poses to help us get down their proportional differences.

Having 5 minutes to capture two figures pushes an artist to find the essential contour and structural lines. Focusing on the negative space between the figures helps to simplify the many arms and legs.

After gestures, we moved on to a 20 minute pose.

And finished the class with this 55-minute pose.  Of course, David & Kathryn took a stretch break in the middle. Many thanks to David and Kathryn for their creative poses and inspiration!

Figure Drawing Update: Kathryn's & David's Duo Poses

I have wanted a chance to really sink myself into drawing duo poses for a long time.  When I teach in the studio, I focus on helping my students, and don't have much time to draw the models myself.  A silver lining to teaching art via Zoom is that I get to draw just as much as my students.  I'm grateful to Kathryn and David for their creative poses to challenge and inspire us!  It was an amazing session.
