Nature Journal Sketches from Vacation

Leaving the arctic cold at home and flying to Florida's warmth brought opportunities to see fresh foliage and wildlife.
I snapped lots of photos while there.  Back at home, I have enjoyed recording the experience in my nature journal.
It's been uplifting to see the bright colors and vibrancy in these Florida scenes.
Sketching from our vacation photos gives us opportunities to relive a favorite experience and to practice making art. I hope you'll dig out some favorite photos of warmer times and make some art with them.

British Isles: More Photos of Cobh, Ireland

After returning from Fota House, we climbed Cobh's steep hillside to St. Colman's Cathedral above the port and train station.

Every facet of the cathedral inspired me with its beauty.  I feel like this door alone could be a painting.

A resident Peregrine falcon perched high atop the spires and gargoyles.

Full of beauty, Cobh charmed me at every turn with sights like this door labeled "Magic Place."

Even the tiny ferns and flowers growing out of the ancient rock walls inspired me.

As we walked back down the hill to return to the QM2, I marveled at these eye-catching houses, stalwart and brilliant.  Their vivid colors must remedy the gray skies of winter.
I hope you find something here to inspire you to make a sketch or splash some paint on the page!

British Isles Tour: Dolphins!

Sailing near Oban, Scotland, David photographed these dolphins riding in our bow wake.  How exciting to see the dolphins racing through the water right alongside our ship! It was as if they wanted to play with the great ocean liner.

I took a quiet afternoon in our stateroom as we sailed on and used his photo to create this watercolor sketch.

I was taken by the way the wind caught the tops of the waves and blew the spray, so I played with wet-in-wet techniques to express that motion.

I hope you'll make your own sketch of these dolphins!

British Isles Tour: Meeting a European Robin

We ate lunch at the Dunollie Castle Cafe, enjoying their outdoor seating.  This friendly robin and his mate patrolled the picnic tables for crumbs.

European Robins enchant me with their curious, friendly nature. I asked David to take the photo above so I could create this sketch from it.

I hope you'll create a sketch from this photo, too!

British Isles Tour: The Coast of Northern Ireland

As we sailed from Cobh, Ireland to Liverpool, England, I was inspired by the shoreline that passed by just outside the ship.  I made a very quick pencil sketch in my landscape-oriented watercolor journal, and snapped a murky photo with my cell phone to help me remember the colors in the shoreline.  Later, I finished the sketch with watercolors.

As we traveled north along the coast of Northern Ireland, we passed Mews Lighthouse near Bangor.  I sketched quickly with a pencil, and wrote notes on the colors I saw.
Later, I added pen lines with a Faber Castell black waterproof marker, and finished the sketch with watercolors.

In the moment, as I sketched the shoreline, it felt impossible to capture the moving scene. Later, looking at the simple landscapes, I love how fresh & alive the pages look to me.  Imperfect art is full of life!

Here's a photo David took of the lighthouse from a slightly different angle.  You can use it to make your own painting of Mews Lighthouse.

Touring the British Isles on the Queen Mary 2

David and I have returned from a tour of the British Isles aboard the Queen Mary 2! We have made Transatlantic crossings on this amazing ship in the past.  This voyage, we circled the UK, from Southampton England, past Wales, over the top of Scotland and back to Southampton.

The first stop on our journey was Cobh, Ireland, port city for Cork.  Kindly, local folks heard that our famous ocean liner would be pulling into the dock, and they came to see her.  We struck up a conversation with one of those locals, a red-haired, blue-eyed woman named Ann, who recommended that we visit Fota House, a restored home built in 1700 with working Victorian gardens and an arboretum.
Along the dock & train tracks, we saw a mural celebrating local butterflies, right next to a lovely pollinator garden. I love how public art turns plain buildings into uplifting spaces!
We took a short train ride to Fota House, and walked through the grounds, finding this Victorian greenhouse.

I made a quick watercolor sketch of the gorgeous lilies I found inside.

The picturesque building was full of flowering plants like this scented geranium.

We also toured the arboretum, where I marveled at ancient, massive trees like this one. Many of the trees were planted in the 1800s.

I admired rose bushes like the one that bore these fruits.
If you'd like to learn more about Fota House and its history, check out their website here:

If you find this inspiring, I hope you'll create art from these photos.

Florida Travel Journal

The beautiful thing about a travel journal is that it is a place to quickly record your observations and sketches.  There's no expectation that you will create finished or "perfect" artworks.  You are free to experiment.

These are some of my quick sketches and watercolor explorations from our trip to Florida.

This pencil sketch of a sea turtle will always remind me of the magical experience of watching an adult sea turtle swim along the beach with apparent ease in the heavy surf.

A loose gesture of the sea oats brings back the feeling of the wind and sun on my face.
And I can just hear the sound of seashells tinkling in my hand when I collected this gathering of shells to paint.
I was sketching the dunes backing the beach, and a man sat down right in my composition.  So I included him in the scene.
Bird observations remind me of how excited I was to witness Magnificent Frigate Birds soaring over the shoreline.
When I glance at this simple kelp drawing, I can just hear the surf pounding and feel the grit of the sand between my toes.
The salt air caused this watercolor sketch to dry with an interesting texture. The salt attracted the moisture in the paints, creating clumps of color.
I encourage you to take a sketchbook with you on your travels, even if those travels are to a local park.

The act of making sketches cements the memories of the visit in your mind, and you'll have a hand-made memory book to revisit long after you return home.

Alaskan Adventure: Misty Fjord National Monument

Misty Fjord National Monument was the final wilderness stop on our Alaskan cruise.  We awoke to misty peaks and Orcas swimming nearby.

As we sailed up through the narrow fjords, we could see rivulets of snowmelt cascading down the steep slopes.

As we departed the  Misty Fjord Monument area, we passed by this peculiar rock jutting up from the fjord.
A pair of Bald Eagles had made a nest at the top of the rock.
Imagine having a home with a view like this!

I hope these photos inspire you to create a drawing or painting.
